Court Sentences Man 3 months’ Imprisonment for Stealing Mobile Phones

AN Area Court in Jos on Friday sentenced Bashir Abubakar to three months’ imprisonment for stealing two mobile phones valued at ₦157,000.Justice Shawomi Bokkos delivered the sentence after Abubakar pleaded guilty to the charge.

However, the judge gave the convict an option to pay a ₦20,000 fine instead of serving the three-month jail term for theft.

The court also ordered him to either pay ₦60,000 in compensation or serve six months in prison if he defaulted.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Insp Ijuptil Daniel, informed the court that the case was reported at the ‘C’ Division Police Station on Feb. 4 by Ms Amina Hafiz.

According to the complainant, the accuse stole her Infinix Hot 7 and an Itel phone, both valued at ₦157,000.

The prosecutor further stated that during the police investigation, the accused confessed to committing the offence.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the Plateau Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.
