Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) has warned Nigerians against purchasing fake and sub – standard products in the markets because of the dangers associated with it.
SON also cautioned manufacturers to desist from inscribing Nigeria Industrial Standard (NIS) mark on their products whereas such products have not been certificated by the organisation.
The SON Director-General, Anthony Aboloma, and its Assistant Director, Product Certification, Engr. Fred Akingbesote, issued the warning separately in Ota, Ogun state, during the presentation of Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) certificates to 30 companies in the state.
Aboloma who was represented at the event by the Ogun State Coordinator 1 of SON, Engr. Samuel Ayuba, said the proliferation of substandard products in the Nigerian markets, is a source of worry because of the potential negative impact on the nation’s economy and health implications.
He noted that SON has been able to checkmate companies using the unauthorized NIS mark on their products, vowing to clamp down on erring companies as all local manufacturers are mandated to acquire MANCAP certificate.
Also, the Assistant Director, Product Certification of SON, Engr.? Fred Akingbesote, urged Nigerians to look out for the NIS Certification mark before making purchase, explaining that products certification was extremely relevant to the nation’s market.
Akingbesote who spoke with journalists shortly after a paper presentation on “Relevance of Product Certification in a Global Economy” said products not certified by the organization is deemed “substandard.”
According to him, purchase of such products is not only risky, but could also mean economic loss following likely lack of satisfaction in the product upon use.
