THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Edo has appealed to the state government to urgently address the numerous infrastructure and operational challenges confronting the orientation camp in Okada.
Mrs Frances Ben-Ushie, Coordinator of the NYSC, made the appeal on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Okada.
She identified critical gaps in accommodation, training facilities, welfare, and logistics support, saying that the gaps could erode the effectiveness of NYSC operations in the state if not promptly addressed.
“Our camp currently faces inadequate hostel accommodation for corpse members and officials, insufficient workshops and labs for SAED training, and a lack of multipurpose hall.
“The dining hall is overstretched to serve multiple functions,” she lamented.
The NYSC boss also highlighted the growing burden of electricity tariffs and generator running costs, the lack of a dedicated operational vehicle for monitoring corps members across the 18 local government areas.
She also urged the state government to help in the completion of the camp access gate, and resolve the encroachment due to a lack of perimeter documentation.
The NYSC state coordinator decried the non-payment of state allowances and the absence of feeding augmentation, which she said had led to a “massive relocation of Corps members to other states.”
“I appeal to Your Excellency to intervene in these pressing matters. Your attention and support will greatly improve our ability to deliver quality orientation and service experiences,” she said.
She added that corps members deployed to Edo had contributed significantly to sectors like education, health, agriculture, and community development.
The NYSC boss revealed that a total of 1,370 prospective corps members, comprising 672 males and 698 females, had been successfully registered as part of the Batch ‘A’ Stream II.
In his address, Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo, reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for youth empowerment and national unity.
Okpebholo, who was represented by Mrs Aiyegbeni Balogun, functional Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youths and Humanitarian Affairs, emphasised the immense opportunities that existed in Edo across key sectors.
The governor encouraged the corps members to embrace the year-long service with zeal and purpose.
“On behalf of the government and good people of Edo State, I warmly welcome you to our vibrant state , rich in culture, history, and opportunities,” the governor said.
“Your welfare, safety and security remain top priorities of this administration.
“Edo State holds immense potential for personal and professional growth.
We urge you to explore and leverage the NYSC platform as a launchpad for your aspirations,” he said.
