A 36-year-old man, Izuchukwu Ugwuzor, appeared in an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Tuesday for allegedly beating his wife, Anuli, to a pulp.
Ugwuzor, a resident of Sango-Tedo, Ajah on Lekki-Epe expressway, is standing trial on a charge of assault. The Prosecutor, Insp. Tony Elibeh, said that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 7 in his residence. Elibeh said that the accused unlawfully beat his wife with a belt and inflicted wounds on her buttocks and laps.
“The complainant said that she sustained injuries on her buttocks as a result of the beating with belt by her husband following an argument that ensued between them,’’ he said.
Elibeh said the offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, which on conviction attracts three years imprisonment.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Senior Magistrate, Mr Titus Abolarinwa, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum. He adjourned the case till Aug. 31 for mention.
