GOC 6 Division Pledges Continued Collaboration With DSS in Niger Delta Security Efforts

THE General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, has reaffirmed the division’s commitment to closely collaborate with the Department of State Services (DSS) to address security challenges in the Niger Delta Region.

According to Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 6 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the GOC made this statement on Friday, 13 September 2024, during a courtesy visit by the newly-appointed State Director of Security (SDS) for Rivers State Command, Mr. Benedict Akinkumi, at the division’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.

Major General Abdussalam emphasized the importance of information sharing among security agencies, noting that such cooperation is crucial in tackling the complexities of the operating environment. He highlighted that the 6 Division has been working alongside other security agencies, leading to the successful execution of several operations.

The GOC noted that the division had intensified efforts against illegal oil bunkering, crude oil theft, and other related crimes, which had increased pressure on criminals who were now resorting to other forms of criminal activities such as sea piracy and kidnapping.

He said that identified flashpoints would receive targeted responses to curb these threats, emphasizing that the division remained committed to ensuring the safety and security of the region.

Expressing confidence in Mr. Akinkumi’s abilities, Major General Abdussalam welcomed the SDS and underscored the division’s readiness to continue its proactive approach to combatting criminality in the Niger Delta.

In his remarks, Mr. Akinkumi sought guidance and collaboration from the 6 Division as he began his role in Rivers State.

He acknowledged the complexities of the security landscape and stressed the need for robust collaboration among security agencies to effectively manage the challenges.

Drawing from his previous experience in Bayelsa State, Mr. Akinkumi highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation, particularly with the Nigerian Army, to ensure seamless operations.

He reaffirmed the DSS’ commitment to addressing the identified flashpoints of criminal activities in the state.
