The Ekiti state government has said it has impounded 77 motor vehicles and hundreds of motorcycles popularly
called ‘Okada’ during the
first week of the general checking of vehicle particulars and driver’s
licenses in the state.
It also said the internally generated revenue of the state keeps increasing by a million naira due to the exercise.
Special Adviser to the Ekiti State Governor on Internally Generated
Revenue (IGR), Mr. Ropo Ogunjobi who made this known in Ado-Ekiti,asserts that the exercise was to guarantee safety and security on
roads in the state, stressing that the move would ensure that only
properly licensed drivers and vehicles with valid papers are allowed on the roads.
Fayose
Ogunjobi added that the exercise was being executed through joint
efforts of staff of the State Board of Internal Revenue, officials of
the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Police and Vehicle
Inspection Officers (VIO) in the state.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress of the exercise, the
Governor’s aide said the exercise would not only minimize road
accidents thereby saving lives and property of the people, it would
also boost the state’s IGR.
Ogunjobi noted that there has been an upsurge of up to a million naira
daily on IGR of the state since the commencement of the exercise.
According to him, “the turnout of customers for registration and
renewal of vehicle particulars as well as applications for renewal of
driver’s license have increased tremendously, saying that the
development would boost the current deplorable financial situation of
the state occasioned by huge debt profile inherited by the Fayose led
administration from its predecessor and the dwindling revenue accrued
to the state from the federation account”.
Assuring that all impounded vehicles would be released to their owners
as soon as the papers were perfected, he however cautioned motorists
against patronizing touts, stressing that payments should be made at
designated banks while vehicle papers should be obtained at the Ado,
Ikere and Ido Ekiti centers to avoid falling into the hands of
fraudsters.
