Mr Razaq Yusuf had perfected plans to abscond when he learnt his 28-year-old wife, Sakirat, had given birth to quintuplets at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
But something changed his mind. He revealed this on Wednesday.
He said strong counseling by friends and family members strengthened his faith that help would surely come his way to take care of the five new babies.
He explained that when the pregnancy was three months old, scan showed that five babies were in the womb. That was when he started to put up plans to run away.
But he changed his mind when friends and family bombarded him with with counselling and assurances that help would come miraculously.
And help has indeed started to come. On Monday when his wife finally delivered the babies, he cried out for assistance. On Wednesday, a charity organization, Tabitha Heritage Foundation, made a little cash donation to the couple to help with part of the hospital bills.
The Osun/Oyo Area Command of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) also donated items including bottled water, soft drink, milk, infant formula, Pampers and other useful infant products.
That was not all. The couple also got useful items as well as cash from members of the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN) and some other charitable individuals
Yusuf thanked the donors and expressed confidence that the items and cash would help a great deal in taking care of the quintuplets.
Yusuf, who is now a father of seven children, however lamented that he would return to his one-room apartment with all his family when the babies and wife are discharged, except a miracle happens that can make them relocate to a larger apartment.
It was learnt that Yusuf had already started begging from staff and other patients in the hospital before external help started coming.
Yusuf however disclosed that the hospital has stopped receiving money from him although the hospital’s Head of the Public Relations Unit, Mr Ayodeji Bobade, said he could not confirm if the hospital would write off the bills.
