Nigerian parents have been urged to let go of superstition, prevent newly born babies untimely death by not forcefully removing the ‘Natal Teeth’ as it is a normal growth.
This advice was given by a Nigerian medical doctor practising abroad, Dr Olufunmillayo, on his Twitter account where he occasionally sheds light on medical issues. He said the misconception people have about the Natal teeth is why some adults call such newborns possessed.
In his tweet, he said;
Ever heard of “Natal Teeth”?
This is the teeth a baby is born with.
The child is NOT a witch.
The child is NOT “possessed”.
Pls NEVER pull out the teeth yourself.
You can cause the baby to bleed, to develop infections and die.
Help us save the life of a child.
When some parents see their newborn with teeth, they panic and think something extremely abnormal has happened.
This is NOT true.
Being born with teeth happens in some babies. It is called Natal Teeth.
It is NOT an “abomination”
Do NOT abandon babies in the bush because of it.
It is good to add that natal teeth happen round the world.
It does NOT mean the child is “special”.
It does NOT mean the child has superpowers. It does NOT mean the child has “authority” (ase) in its mouth.
Please do NOT do anything dangerous with or to babies because of this.
What causes Natal Teeth?
The exact cause is unknown.
Can it be normal?
Some dentists say it can be.
What we know is it can be associated with certain more serious medical problems in the childlike cleft lip, cleft palate and some other conditions the child may be born with.
What does natal teeth look like?
They can be loose,
They can be brown,
They can be yellow.
What babies are more likely to have natal teeth? Some studies I’ve seen seem to suggest that male babies are more at risk of natal teeth than female babies.
So what should you do about Natal Teeth? ALL cases of babies born with teeth should be taken to the doctor.
The tooth can just fall off and the child may accidentally swallow it blocking its airways/lungs and dying in the process.
This is very important.
Please note this.
The tooth can injure the child’s tongue.
The tooth can injure the mom’s nipples as child breastfeeds.
These are ALL reasons why you MUST take the child to a dentist, a doctor or a paediatrician to have that tooth checked.
Removing the tooth yourself can kill the baby!
